Adelson begins with a comprehensive overview of the types of plastics and resins used in jewelry-making, plus an overview of equipment and tools that may seem redundant to the experienced jewelry maker but which I found quite useful. The inspiration gallery is interspersed throughout the book,

Adelson begins with a comprehensive overview of the types of plastics and resins used in jewelry-making, plus an overview of equipment and tools that may seem redundant to the experienced jewelry maker merely which I found quite useful. The inspiration gallery is interspersed throughout the book, and was worth slowing downward and actually savoring the images and the possibilities they hinted at. The assembled examples of art jewelry (and some small sculptures) are stunning, modern and highly varied. She definitely curated this department with a preference toward work of a highly finished, "fine art" sensibility, which I really appreciated. Definitely there was zilch in the gallery that would merit the "that's just PLASTIC" dismissive sniff.

The projects are, past necessity, simpler, but lay out a clear path towards more complex pieces one time the techniques presented are mastered. I besides appreciated that while the inspirations where very loftier-end and fine art, the projects walk a very comfortable line between the (spurious, in my view, merely every nowadays) "art" and "craft" camps. While the projects are not illustrated in an accented step-past-step manner, they seemed thoroughly presented and reasonably like shooting fish in a barrel to follow.

Over the course of the 22 projects, she also shows several different takes on many techniques; ii different kinds of bracelets using two dissimilar approaches to mold-making, for example. Likewise, a wide range of dissimilar mixing of media appear, including quite a few upcycling/recycling approaches, and effects from elegant faux cloisonne to funky mod rings. The emphasis is definitely on transformational techniques, that use the properties of resin/plastic to create something that doesn't necessarily look like plastic.

My simply quibble with the projects is that the 2 projects concerning including images feel very "phoned in" — information technology'due south a clear caption of the techniques, but the projects are very simple and non nearly every bit intriguing equally the other projects.

I definitely experience more excited nigh the possibilities for my own work in resin later reading this; the example pieces Adelson used were very effective in firing my imagination.

I especially recommend this volume for anyone interested in working with sheet acrylic, plexi and other non-resins in jewelry, which I have non seen another jewelry book cover.

I'm experienced with crafting jewelry merely not and then with working with plastic and resin and I found this book to be very helpful and inspiring. With resin work currently on the upswing, I am guessing that there are more upwards-to-appointment materials since this book was published in 2008, and I wish the author had mentioned more brand names that she recommends or, at least, allowed those brand names to be shown in the photographs, but it seems similar the processes and techniques were thoroughly explained. Near I'm experienced with crafting jewelry just not so with working with plastic and resin and I found this book to be very helpful and inspiring. With resin work currently on the upswing, I am guessing that there are more upward-to-appointment materials since this book was published in 2008, and I wish the author had mentioned more brand names that she recommends or, at to the lowest degree, immune those make names to be shown in the photographs, but information technology seems similar the processes and techniques were thoroughly explained. Most all the projects produced interesting and elegant pieces (with the exception of the Safari bracelets-how in the world did that make it in this volume?). The range of styles is wide and the inclusion of gallery pieces interspersed throughout is inspirational. Lots of photographs to linger over. Now, I'll be on the hunt for billiard balls from which to arts and crafts my first ring! ...more
